Steph Feller
Three words to describe you:
Creative, empathetic, loving
Do you have any hidden talents?
I can do dishes, bathe, and flush a toilet with about 1 gallon of water. Thanks, Peace Corps!
What is your favorite food?
Indian and Thai
What character trait do you most admire?
I admire genuineness.
What is your fave yoga pose and why do you like it?
I love the simplicity, humility, and gentleness of child’s pose.
What is your favorite TV show? Movie?
The newer Les Mis movie makes my heart happy.
Best part about being a yoga instructor?
Teaching yoga really pushes me to be continuously learning and growing, both intellectually and spiritually. I also love connecting with the students.
Tell us something surprising about yourself.
I have visited 27 countries. I also lived in Uganda, East Africa for two years as an education volunteer.
What is your spirit animal?
A wild horse
What is your favorite charity?
World Joy. They are a local non-profit that works with 13 villages in rural Ghana, West Africa. I volunteered with them for 5 years, so I know they are doing great work!
What is the first thing you do when you wake up?
Meditate and pray
Do you have a motto or a mantra?
I created my own mantra that I say every day to remind me of who I am. Part of it is “ishvara pranidhana,” the Sanskrit phrase for surrender to the divine.
What movie or novel character do you most identify with and why?
I identify with nearly all of the characters in my favorite children’s novel, The Tale of Despereaux, in one way or another. There’s so much courage and longing and forgiveness in those characters, and hearts dappled with light and darkness.
What super power would you like to have?
I would like to be able to look people in the eyes and have them remember who they are, their highest, best self. Is that a super power? Also, I want to fly!
Who do you admire and why?
I’ve always admired Socrates’ and other philosophers’ questioning spirit and thirst for knowledge, and Mother Teresa’s unfailing compassion and wisdom.
Do you have any strange phobias?
I’m terrified of cockroaches, though the phobia got a little less intense after I was forced to co-habitate with them in Uganda <shudder>.
Name three things on your bucket list.
I kind of hate the idea of a list, but I do want to write a children’s novel, have a weeping willow tree, and learn to be absolutely fearless.
What is your favorite style of yoga to teach? To practice?
I love Yoga Nidra, Yin Yoga, and Kundalini Yoga.
What is the coolest place you’ve ever visited?
I tend to love the mountains the best, so the Swiss Alps and the Semien Mountains in Ethiopia are at the top of my list.
What is the craziest thing you’ve ever done?
I don’t know how crazy it is, but I went paragliding last year. So fun!
