John Cottrell 21st Yoga Instructor

Jason Lawner

Do you have any hidden talents?

I’m a trumpet player that studied music at The Frost School of Music at The University of Miami. Not really a hidden talent, but a skill that many yoga folks don’t know about me.

What do you do for fun?

I like to be outdoors and active and involved in some sort of adventure. Climbing, Skiing, Snowboarding, Hiking, Backpacking, Camping, Biking, and learning new skills. I also love to cook and grew up learning how to make reduction sauces in the french style by my fathers side. When I’m at home I enjoy being in the kitchen preparing nutritious and hearty meals.

Who is your favorite band or music artist right now or of all time?

For a musician picking one is just too difficult, though I’m a huge jazz and classical music fan. Some of my all time favorites are any of Beethoven’s Symphonies, Lee Morgan’s trumpet playing, Bill Evan’s piano playing, Billie Holiday’s singing, and most Miles Davis recordings especially with Gil Evans’ orchestrations.

What is your fave yoga pose?

Urdhva Dhanurasana

Best part about being a yoga instructor?

Getting to spend my time surrounded by great and uplifting beings that are committed to cultivating themselves.

Do you have any nicknames? What are they?

Jay Bird

List two pet peeves.

Pessimism and arrogance

What is your spirit animal?

A monkey (Hanuman is my ishta devata)

What is the first thing you do when you wake up?

I’m a big proponent of morning rituals/routines that I can perform on auto pilot without thinking about it. Breathing, meditation, sun exposure for that Vitamin D, and buttery bulletproof coffee.

What is your favorite style of yoga to teach? To practice?

I like to take gentle-ish slower moving yoga classes with contemplative themes. I teach in that style but often cater to those who crave a little bit of physical challenge in their yoga practice. Though that is fun, I most enjoy working with students that have physical limitations and/or injuries that require the details that I’m known for.
